The Phoenix Society is an active participant at SMA’s Southern Region Burn Conference, held Dec. 1-4 in Winston-Salem, NC, offering a SOAR (Survivors Offering Assistance in Recovery) coordinator training session, and an advocacy course.

Manny Gonzalez, a Phoenix Society advocate and burn survivor, took advantage of the SOAR training session. He also spent time representing the Society at our exhibitor booth!

“The SOAR program gives me the opportunity, confidence and knowledge to take the next step in educating the community on peer support,” said Gonzalez, who was burned while serving in the Marine Corps. “As a burn survivor representing the burn community, this event is important in supporting and acknowledging the health care professionals for their hard work and dedication.”

The Phoenix Society also offered an advocacy course, taught by media relations expert and our friend, Brad Phillips from Phillips Media Relations. Brad instructed nine participants in the fire sprinkler initiative and how they can be stronger advocates for our cause!

Phoenix Society Associate Director Pam Peterson said the event is a great opportunity to network with partners in the burn community.

“It is also an opportunity to educate, and bring awareness to the resources and programs available to burn survivors and their families,” she said.

An informative and learning environment, SMA brings together all burn care disciplines into a unique and educational forum, discussing the direction of future burn care.
