Burn survivor and triathlete Shay Eskew is competing for a spot in the 2012 Ironman World Championship through the Kona Inspired competition. He has made it to the final round of the contest and now we need your votes to help Shay win a chance to compete. Vote now!
For Shay, a place in the Ironman World Championship is about more than just his passion for sports. “People who suffer burn injuries often have a challenging time getting back to living,” he says. “I have been in pain for 30 years since my accident – it’s not easy – but despite how we look on the outside, people with disfiguring burns are exactly the same people they were before their accident. For me, being an Ironman would be the ultimate affirmation that ‘anything is possible,’ and there is nothing I, nor any other burn survivor, cannot do.”
As part of Team Phoenix, Shay is raising money to support the Phoenix Society and the Shriners Children’s Hospital. “The Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors does everything it can to make life easier for patients who have been through a huge trauma and are trying to pick up the pieces of their lives,” he said.
Though we may not all be able to run triathlons, Shay should be an example that nothing is impossible. A burn injury should never stop someone from doing something they love, and Shay is living proof that even with physical challenges, attitude is what really counts.
