The Oregon Burn Center, located at Legacy Emanuel Health Medical Center in Portland, completed the Phoenix Society’s SOAR (Survivors Offering Assistance in Recovery) instructor course on June 22nd, training three new SOAR instructors! They also completed their second SOAR Peer Supporter training since becoming a SOAR hospital in 2009, training 13 additional peer supporters.

“It was an honor to get to know and train the burn survivors and families involved,” said Pam Peterson, Program Director of the Phoenix Society. “The strength and openness with which they shared their stories was humbling.”

Added burn survivor and SOAR peer supporter Mona Krueger, “The camaraderie of a shared reality is powerful. Our SOAR volunteers offer perspective and hope.”

SOAR is a hospital-based program developed by the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors and a national committee of experts, providing training to burn survivors or their family members who want to volunteer and help others whose lives have been touched by a burn injury.
